Objectives and Philosophy of the Programme

 Objectives of the Programme

 1.     To enhance the employability of the students through skill formation.
 2.

To eradicate the skill gap existing between the students of conventional and professional streams and that between the haves and have-nots.
3.

To make use of the new generation employment opportunities available in the private sector in the wake of the operation of the forces of competition and globalisation.
4.

To provide supplementary skills to the students in their respective fields of graduation in order to derive better complementarities between knowledge acquisition skill formation and employability.

Philosophy of the Programme

In the changed job market environment, imparting complementary skills along with knowledge is a vital part of quality higher education.

Globalisation is a challenge as well as an opportunity. Over the last one decade, substantial quantities of jobs were created in the service and industrial sectors. These jobs necessitate skills related to computer, accounting, communication and tourism from the part of the students. Hence, the course aims to provide these vital skills to the students of Development Economics and other courses so that they can get productive employment in the private sector.

The Department acknowledges the widening skill gap between the students of the conventional courses and that of professional courses. To rectify this, and to enable the students of the conventional stream like Development Economics, to get remunerative and productive employment, skill development and support measures are complementary to the syllabus and curriculum and hence are to be imparted at the right time i.e. during graduation.

Career and Skill Development Programme (C S D P)
The
Career and Skill Development Programme (CSDP) was launched in 2006-07 academic year to give special coaching to the students to enable them to find a productive and remunerative job. The CSDP is organized by the Department of Economics on behalf of the college. The programme aims to enable the students to find productive jobs in the competitive private sector job market.
In the initial year, the programme was designed to help the students to face competitive examinations for different jobs conducted by various public sector recruitment agencies including the state PSC. Classes were conducted in different areas including General Knowledge, General Mental Ability, Arithmetics etc.
The result of the first year’s coaching was remarkable, given the available time and scale of effort made. But the success of students was largely unnoticed and unrecorded because of the infancy stage of the programme.

For the current year (2007-08), in the context of encouraging results, the college has expanded the programme to a skill development mode to enhance the employability of the students. As a part of this, special skills in the field of information technology and computer application, accounting and languages were provided. A very facilitating factor in the conduct of the programme was the availability of freshly recruited lecturers in different fields of knowledge and skills. Besides, the newly built computer lab also significantly added to the infrastructure capability of the college for the conduct of the programme.
