The college offers four undergraduate programmes and one postgraduate programme.

PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENTS

Department of Economics

    NMSM Govt. college is one of the few institutions in the state offering graduate course in Development Economics. The department started functioning in 1999 with the launch of BA Degree. The degree course in development economics is a full-fledged economics graduation course on a par with traditional B.A. Economics courses in terms of recognition and equivalence. The two subsidiary subjects offered in the course are econometrics and foreign trade. In contrast with traditional economics graduation course where the subsidiaries are non economics subjects, these subjects are current and stand in good stead for the student when it comes to employment and higher education.

Activities and programmes of the department.

1. Honouring  rank holders.

  The department honoured the University rank holders of Development Economics of the year 2007.The first rank was won by Chitra Viswanathan Nair while the second and third ranks were grabbed by Zaidul Abid and Sangetha T.S. respectively.

2. Career Orientation Programme

            The department has launched a career orientation programme for the students to help them  face competitive examinations more effectively. Classes are going on various topics including Indian Constitution ,General mental ability, Geography and General Science.

3. Socio-economic Survey

The students of the department carried out a socio-economic survey of the entire students of the college.

Department of Commerce

It is the largest department of the college, offering  both P.G. and U.G Courses. M Com with Finance as specialization was started in 1993-94. The department also offers B.Com with finance as optional subject.

Activities and programmes of the Department.

The department conducts debates, group discussions, mock interviews and role plays on every Friday for M.Com first semester students. Regular tutorial sessions are conducted in each class. II BCom students Conducted study tour to Kuruva Dweep . On 9th August 07 the department  arranged a talk on 'Realities of Modern Banking'  by Sr.C.Ponnumani, Manager, Canara Bank .

Department of History

        The department of history is the first department in the college, ever since the institute was elevated to the rank of a degree college. The department offers B.A. and has a strength of 150. Besides the core subjects of Indian History and world History, the course includes an optional paper entitled 'History of Indian women through the ages'. The paper highlights the plight and sufferings of Indian women, who have been marginalized and downtrodden for centuries. Economics and politics are  the subsidiary subjects.

1.Computer literacy programmes for all BA students.
2.Departmental meetings for students and teachers.
3.History association is an organization under the Department. It periodically conduct academic programme directly or indirectly related to history.

III. Highlights of the department
Govt. college, Kalpetta, is one of the two colleges in the district offering B.A.History.
IV Co-curricular Activities
The department conducts study tour every year
Students actively engaged in various activities like philately, cartography and numismatics.
V Seminar
The department planned and organised a National Seminar on 7,8 and 9 December 2005.
VI Project:
The Department proposes to construct a cultural heritage museum and the project proposal has been submitted  to the U.G.C.

Department of Mass Communication

                Started in the year 1999-2000, the department offers degree in Mass Communication

 with an annual intake capacity of 40. Mass communications is an influential and expanding area of learning and research within the social sciences. New technologies in broadcasting, telecommunications, print and other industries have revolutionised the way we exchange information, do business, talk to, entertain and understand each other. This course provides a critical consideration of the economics, culture, politics and sociology of mass communications on a global, national and local scale. It examines fundamental issues in mass communications theory and assesses ongoing developments in the area of global communications, media regulation, media policy and communication technologies.

Activities and programmes of the Department.

Students of the department have bagged first three ranks in 2002,2005,2006 and 2007.Faculty members also produced some notable documentaries and short films. Deepu Jose won third price in state level documentary festival. Department also organised a National level seminar on 'Media for the Mass, Media for the market'. Department also conducted a film festival this year .Students of the department also published two news papers titled Mass Voice and Mass Times last year. First year Mass Communication students visited India Vision news channel studio. The department also organised a one day seminar on 3 December 2007 on “New Trends in  Multimedia and Career Guidance”.
