Wayanad

Wayanad
The district of
Wayanad,
formed in 1980, is one of the few regions in the country abounding in
lush forests, luscious fruits, lovely flora coupled with teeming
wildlife resting in the lap of pristine nature. This emerald gift of
nature is nestled among the mountains of western ghats and is located at
a
distance
of 76 km from the nearest sea-shore of Kozhikode. With quick access to
hot tourist destinations such as Ooty, Mysore, Bangalore and Coorg,
Wayanad lures hordes of tourists from far and wide.
The place is rich in population of aboriginals such as
Adiyars and Kurichyas and thus offers a rare chance for anthropologists
to gain first hand exposure and perceptive insights into the social
fabric and cultural conventions .
From a historical viewpoint too the place is worthy of exploration: there are ancient monuments, relicts and edicts that bear testimony to the rich cultural life that existed here long ago, before Christ.

Agricultre, especially cash crops, has a strong presence in the district. Coffee, black-pepper, ginger, turmeric, cocoa, arecanut, tea, rubber, vanilla, etc., are successfully cultivated here.
